Pet Travel to Ireland & Northern Ireland: Tapeworm Rules

1 The Strict 24h to 120h Time Window

For travel from Great Britain to the Republic of Ireland, your dog must receive an approved tapeworm treatment within the required window before arrival:

2 Approved Medication Requirement

The treatment must contain an ingredient effective against Echinococcus multilocularis, such as praziquantel, and must be administered and recorded by a vet in accordance with the destination requirements.

* Note: Standard over-the-counter flea/worm tablets that do not contain Praziquantel are legally invalid for travel certificates.

3 Vet Signature & Entry on the AHC

The tapeworm treatment must be administered by a vet and recorded in the pet's travel document. The administering vet must:

• Administer the medication or witness administration.
• Record the required treatment details, including the date, time, product and manufacturer, in the appropriate section of the pet travel document.
• Sign and stamp the entry where required by the travel document.

4 Northern Ireland: Different Rules Apply

If you are travelling directly from Great Britain to Northern Ireland, you can use the Northern Ireland Pet Travel Document (PTD). The PTD is free, lasts for the lifetime of the pet, and requires the pet to be microchipped. Under the PTD scheme, your pet does not need a rabies vaccination or tapeworm treatment.

5 Returning to Great Britain

For dogs returning to Great Britain from countries where the tapeworm requirement applies, the treatment must be given by a vet between 24 and 120 hours before the pet enters Great Britain. Check the latest GOV.UK guidance for the country you are returning from.
